Programme Technology

Will AI make artists and thus the art school redundant in the future? No, that is not what this programme line is about. Technology, social media and AI have now become an inescapable part of students' lives and creative process in art education. How does this affect student behaviour and their view of the world? In this programme line, we not only want to investigate how technology can be optimally and creatively used in art education of the future. Above all, we want to consider what art education needs to prepare students for a technology-conscious art practice.

Go to the ArtEZ Studium Generale Agenda to register directly for Thursday morning or afternoon. It is advised to register for both the morning ánd afternoon Technology programme.

Technologie

Marijke Goeting studied Graphic Design and completed a research master Art and Visual Culture at the Radboud University, where she received her master’s degree cum laude. She is a senior lecturer in media theory at the departments of Graphic Design and Design Art Technology at ArtEZ. In 2022, she obtained her PhD. Her dissertation Fast, Fluid, Fragmented: Art and Design in the Digital Age, published by ArtEZ Press, examines how the work of contemporary artists and designers allows us to reflect critically on the sociocultural effects of digital media and technology.
WORKSHOPS AND LECTURE

A.I. Could Do That
Towards Critical and Technologically Literate Art Education
by Marijke Goeting / Lecture & Workshop / English

This lecture explores what is necessary for a critical and technologically literate art education. Artificial Intelligence is often hailed as the next big step in the production of images and texts and is feared by many creatives as a force that may take over their jobs. This lecture examines the myths and hype surrounding AI, as well as the very real, dirty and exploitative practices that allow this technology to operate at large scale. In the lecture and subsequent workshop, we will explore how the advent of AI (or better yet: machine learning) affects our understanding of art, and by extension how new technologies force us to reflect on (the future of) art education. What at first may seem like a threat may ultimately help us to critically assess some old assumptions about art education and rethink what and how we teach.

AI tools are on the rise and we can no longer ignore that fact. Will we integrate them in the curriculum, or will we be bystanders and watch the changes they will inevitably bring? Deciding upon the usage and limits of AI in the educational structure has never been more crucial. As ArtEZ has no such policy in place, it is time to reflect upon and examine critically where AI stands in the Future Art School.

What makes a great teacher, and can AI fill that role? What kind of classes would we need if AI was a subject? The workshop participants will brainstorm on these topics and then reflect together with the AI itself on its role in art education.

The Future Storytelling Lab
by Het Future Storytelling Lab / Presentation and Workshops / English
The Future Storytelling Lab (FSL) is an interdisciplinary research space where 4th-year undergraduates, master's students and ArtEZ staff are welcome to delve into working with new technologies. On this Thursday, they will briefly present their working methods in the morning. In both the morning and the afternoon programme, there will also be time during short workshops to get to know this lab better and pitch ideas.

In the future storytelling lab, the VR artist Matunda Groenendijk and the Dancer and Choreographer Amit Palgi will share some of their outcomes from the two-week residency they had working on their project Cycles. Cycles is a short VR dance film, that calls to brack the Cycles or rutins in our life to use to the fullest the one Cycle of life we have. The project received a development grant from the film fund. Parallel to the artistic sharing, they will share also practical information regarding using the new Rococo motion capture suit the future storytelling lab just got.
