Chihiro Geuzebroek works to restore and restory our relationship with earth and each other. She does so in the capacity of film, decolonial climate justice activism, campaigning, public speaking, songwriting and spoken word. Subjects tend to orbit around rebuilding native nations and climate justice. She is Director Producer of the feature film Radical Friends, former campaign manager of the political party BIJ1 and co-founder of Climate Liberation Bloc. She is currently working on an Indigenous futurist screenplay situated in the US when the first Indigenous president comes to power. Recently she wrote the theme song for the Shell Must Fall campaign. The video clip will be launched in march 2020. She has also produced two decolonial poetry shows; one in Perdu and one in Pakhuis de Zwijger (2020).
Geuzebroek is a Bolivian-Dutch woman whose access to Quechua Indigenous roots were severed growing up in Amsterdam. She has been interested in decolonial activism and peacemaking since she was in primary school.
About the film Radical Friends she says: "It spurred from a desire to connect the dots between decolonial struggle and climate politics and personal experiences of feeling alienated in the world I lived in. My ambition was to share an activist coming of age story that didn’t result in death like ‘Motorcycle diaries’ or ‘Into the wild’. I wanted the radical honesty of a personal story like the animation film ‘Persepolis’. I wanted the personal transformation connected with friendship building like the documentary ‘Shut up and sing’. I wanted to see Quechua people on a big screen. I didn’t want to be didactic but showed lived everyday activism. I wanted something that no Dutch broadcast would finance. So I self financed and found people who invested a lot in kind and services."
The film premiered in Bolivia at the Human Rights Film festival where it won best Bolivian feature jury award in 2014. It was also selected for festivals in Colombia, Uruguy, Canada, Czech Republic and had its Dutch premiere at World Cinema Amsterdam.
